Charles and Kate Garrison founded the nursery in 1959. They worked nights—Charles on the railroad and Kate at the hospital—while building the garden center during the day.

Kate served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, participated in the Berlin Airlift, rose to lieutenant colonel, and later graduated cum laude from Centenary College. Their work ethic and generosity still shape the way Garrison's serves Shreveport.
